April 17, 2009
This is Communications Director Gregg Overman with the APA Information Hotline for Friday, April 17.
SPC TRACKING EXERCISE CANTALOUPE: APA SPC’s next tracking exercise, “Cantaloupe,” will take place for SFO-based pilots on Tuesday and Wednesday, April 21-22. Day one of the exercise includes all SFO domicile pilots assigned to work a flight. Day two involves only pilots assigned to work a flight in a specific bid status to be announced. Log on to the members’ home page of alliedpilots.org to determine if your bid status is being tracked and for specific instructions each day.
APA BOARD OF DIRECTORS SPECIAL MEETING: The APA Board of Directors reconvened today at union headquarters in Fort Worth at 9 a.m. to continue its special meeting, including discussion and debate of various motions and resolutions.
Also during this week’s meeting, Government Affairs Committee Chairman Captain Bob Coffman briefed the Board on recent developments concerning American Airlines’ application for worldwide antitrust immunity and related joint business agreement with other oneworld carriers. Captain Coffman noted that an array of influential voices have echoed the same concerns APA has expressed about the wisdom of antitrust immunity in general, including U.S. Representative James Oberstar, who chairs the House Transportation Committee; former American Airlines Chairman and CEO Robert Crandall; and the House and Senate Judiciary oversight arms.
Captain Coffman briefed other recent developments in Washington, D.C., including initial efforts to align airline and railroad bankruptcy procedures with respect to labor agreements. Unlike those of air carriers, railroad labor agreements cannot be abrogated in bankruptcy. In addition, lawmakers are discussing the possibility of placing time limits on airline industry negotiations so that bargaining meets the “prompt and orderly settlement” standard stipulated by the Railway Labor Act. Captain Coffman pointed out that the two latter developments are a direct result of US Airways Captain “Sully” Sullenberger’s February congressional testimony about the current state of the airline pilot profession.
Allison Clark, APA’s newly hired Director of Industry Analysis, provided a brief overview of American Airlines’ financial state, including a recap of the first-quarter results.
Also during today’s session, the Board waived policy pertaining to APA’s budgeting process to enable the Information Technology Department to continue operating for the remainder of fiscal year 2009. At 3:15 p.m., the Board voted to adjourn.
That’s it for today. Thanks for checking this hotline.
