This is Communications Committee member First Officer Scott Shankland with an APA Information Hotline for Friday, June 19.
COALITION OF AIRLINE PILOTS ASSOCIATIONS (CAPA) BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING: This week, APA President Captain Lloyd Hill and Government Affairs Chairman Captain Bob Coffman represented APA at the CAPA Board of Directors meeting in Washington, D.C.
The meeting was conducted over two days and included representatives from APA, the Independent Pilots Association (UPS pilots), the Southwest Airline Pilots Association, the Teamsters 1224 (ABX pilots) and the US Airline Pilots Association (US Airways). In addition to CAPA briefings on airline safety, security and legislative issues, the CAPA board met with several U.S. legislators, including Michigan Representative Thaddeus McCotter (R-MI), Illinois Representative John Shimkus (R-IL) and Florida Representative Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL). Additionally, the CAPA member association presidents also went to the U.S. Department of Transportation to meet with Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood and Federal Aviation Administration Associate Administrator for Aviation Safety Peggy Gilligan. There, the group discussed operation and safety issues impacting the airline industry and pilot profession.
Also during the board meeting, CAPA board members unanimously voted to add NetJets pilots into the coalition. NetJets has nearly 3,000 pilots operating approximately 300 aircraft in a fractional business flying operation.
The CAPA board meeting adjourned late Thursday.
APPLE COMPUTER SECURITY RISK: Those members who utilize Apple Mac computers may leave their computer information exposed to significant security vulnerability when utilizing any Java-based program, including the "2nd Stage Sabre" function on the aapilots Web site. Users of Apple computers that have the most current Java update are being warned that by using "2nd Stage Sabre" they will need to grant American Airlines unrestricted access to their computer. If a pilot denies access, the "2nd Stage Sabre" will not function. APA is currently researching this issue and attempting to determine what can be done to resolve it. In the meantime, to download the newly released security patch, you can use the internal software update function, or go to the Apple security updates page at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1222. On that site, you can download the JAVA for MAC OS update for either OS version 10.4 or 10.5.
That’s all we have for today. Thanks for checking this hotline.
