This is APA Communications Committee Chairman Captain Sam Mayer with the APA Information Hotline for Tuesday, September 22.
APA BOARD OF DIRECTORS FALL MEETING: The APA Board of Directors resumed its regularly scheduled fall meeting at 9 a.m. today at union headquarters in Fort Worth. This morning’s agenda included a briefing by the Strategic Planning Committee in closed executive session. The Board subsequently waived the procedures governing elections to the Strategic Planning Committee and affirmed all current members for a new 12-month term, including committee chairman First Officer Greg Shayman and members Captain Glenn Schafer, Captain Billy Young, Captain David Bates, First Officer Anthony Chapman, First Officer Jason Goldberg and Captain Steve Roach.
APA Director of Benefits Mike Knoerr briefed the Board on a series of benefits-related items, including changes to company medical benefits for 2010. We have provided details of these changes in recent editions of the APA News Digest. Mr. Knoerr also reported that the most recent medical inflation rate has been calculated at 8.5 percent. As stipulated by arbitration, the company will absorb the initial 5 percent increase, with the remaining 3.5 percent increase to be passed on to our pilots.
Benefits Review and Appeal Board Chairman Captain Keith Wilson spent the majority of his briefing discussing issues associated with the APA Supplemental Medical Plan (SMP), which is serving as primary medical coverage for a greater number of participants than originally envisioned. The Board directed Captain Wilson to explore ways to ensure the SMP remains viable going forward. One avenue will be for Captain Wilson to hold discussions with members of the Grey Eagles, who make up the bulk of the plan’s participants.
Information Technology Steering Committee (ITSC) Chairman First Officer Paul Fitzgerald updated the Board on the results of the recent security audit of the union’s IT infrastructure, with APA taking steps to address areas that were recommended for additional protection. First Officer Fitzgerald also reported that enhanced disaster recovery is high on IT’s current priority list.
Financial Audit Committee Chairman Captain Mike McClellan reported that his committee conducted its semi-annual audit on September 15-17 and found no issues of any substance.
Scope Compliance Committee Chairman Captain Len Turcotte recapped his committee’s preparations for and participation in last week’s mediated discussions concerning management’s pending joint business agreement (JBA) with British Airways and Iberia. In addition, he briefed the Board on the results of the quarterly scope meeting with management earlier this month.
The Board spent a portion of the afternoon in closed executive session receiving a briefing on the JBA mediation. This closed-session briefing is slated to continue as tomorrow’s first agenda item.
The meeting is scheduled to continue through Friday, with all members in good standing welcome to attend any open portion.
Thanks for checking this hotline.
