This is APA President Captain Dave Bates with the APA Information Hotline for Monday, September 6.
THE MEANING OF LABOR DAY & NEXT ON OUR CALENDAR: With today's observance of Labor Day, I'd like to take a moment to reflect on the meaning of this particular occasion. Labor Day is intended to honor working men and women for their contributions to our society. Of course, despite Labor Day having long been set aside as a federal holiday on the annual calendar, a great many of you are in fact spending the day in the cockpit of an American Airlines jet serving our passengers. If that's your situation today, thank you for your vital contributions to the operation of this airline and to the vitality of our country’s economy. Without you, there would literally be no enterprise known as American Airlines. If on the other hand you're spending the day with family and friends, enjoy—you definitely deserve it.
Labor Day without a doubt carries significance for a great many people in this country and rightly so. That said, the next date of note on the calendar—September 11—now holds arguably greater meaning for those of us who earn our livelihoods as airline crewmembers.
To mark the ninth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, I will be delivering some brief remarks as part of a flag-lowering ceremony beginning at 7:30 a.m. Central on Saturday, September 11 at the 9/11 Flight Crew Memorial in Grapevine, Texas. If your schedule permits, I hope you'll consider joining me for that event or for the candlelight vigil that's also slated for the memorial site beginning at 8 p.m. Central on the 11th.
That's all I have for today. Thanks for checking this Hotline message and, once again, have a safe and enjoyable Labor Day.
